New Study Offers Hope to Younger Women with Breast Cancer
For years researchers have believed that younger women with breast cancer tend to have a more aggressive form of the disease than older women. Now, Duke researchers say they believe they understand why. Their discovery may help improve cancer therapies and spare women the effects of more aggressive treatments. The research found tumors in young women share unique sets of genes not present in older women.
The genes regulate things like immune function, oxygen supply and mutations that are known to be related to breast cancer. Consequently, standard, more aggressive therapies may not be the best approach for younger women. But utilizing targeted therapies and trying to understand their specific biologic features could help scientists design better therapies. |

Trekking Across America
Colorado resident, Ron Kessler is trekking across America in a quest to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. He arrived in Denver July 4th having walked 2,200 miles on his way from Delaware to the California Coast. Outfitted in pink wig and pink sunglasses, he is a sight on the trails.
